For an 'n' flip flop counter,

Ø  The total number of states 2 (0 to 2^n-1)

Ø  The largest number that can be stored in the counter = 2^n-1

To construct any mod counter, the minimum number flip flops required such that: Modulus ≤ 2

Where n is the number of counters.

For example,

A MOD-5 counter requires:

2 ^n≥ 5  hence 3 Flip Flops (means 2x2x2 is 8 ≥ of 5)

Number no. of flip flops are required to construct a mod-12 counter is obtained as:

2^n ≥ 12  i.e. n = 4 (means 2x2x2x2 is 16 ≥ of 12)
